An innovative joint project focused on innovating energy consumption in large buildings through IOT solutions and smart sensor technology for Santander
The Energy Optimization Initiative was a joint project between Pulse Systems, a leading IoT solutions provider, and Santander, created to address the pressing concern of high energy consumption in large commercial buildings, particularly within their bank branches and headquarters across Europe
Large Santander buildings were experiencing inefficient energy usage patterns, leading to unnecessary costs and environmental impact.
Implemented a network of smart sensors and IOT devices to monitor and optimize energy consumption in real-time.
Achieved significant cost reductions and energy savings through data-driven optimization and automated control systems.
A comprehensive look at the key phases and milestones achieved throughout the internship.
Conducted comprehensive research on energy consumption patterns in Santander's large buildings and bank branches. Analyzed existing infrastructure and identified key areas for IOT sensor deployment.
Designed and implemented the core IOT infrastructure using C++ for sensor communication and REST APIs for data transmission to Azure's IOT central hub. Placed sensors across our main HQ, in all 34 offices, and conducted real-time monitoring through the IOT sensors for any energy leaks
Following prototype development, we conducted an intensive 3-week trial period with continuous 24/7 system operation. During this phase, we focused on optimizing energy leak detection algorithms and reducing operational costs through systematic performance tuning and data analysis.
Successfully presented the solution to our Santander stakeholders, including an interested party, Alder Hay hospital, resulting in adoption across 23 Santander buildings, including bank branches, and 4 hospital facilities reducing cost significantly!
A comprehensive tech stack that enabled efficient development and deployment of the IOT solution.
Core language for sensor communication and data processing
Data transmission between sensors and central hub
Smart sensors for real-time energy monitoring
Cost-effective solutions using open source technologies
The culmination of our successful IOT energy optimization project brought together all key stakeholders to celebrate achievements and discuss future implementations.

In this session, we presented comprehensive results, showcasing a 30% cost reduction achieved over a 4-month experiment. The project secured implementation approval across 23 Santander buildings and was further expanded to 4 Alder Hey hospitals. This collaborative effort marked a significant success in sustainable energy management.
The project delivered measurable results that exceeded expectations and created lasting value for all stakeholders involved.
Successfully reduced project implementation costs by 30% through strategic use of open source solutions and efficient resource allocation.
Convinced Alder Hay hospital representatives to implement the energy optimization system across 4 hospital facilities, demonstrating clear ROI and sustainability benefits.
Achieved significant energy consumption reductions through real-time monitoring and automated optimization of building systems and equipment.
